As we know from our school days, writing correctly is a difficult task.
This is especially true when it comes to “trick” words and grammar rules — I’m looking at you, “their” and “they’re.” The struggle, however, isn’t always the same. That means someone on the West Coast, for example, might have trouble spelling a word that isn’t commonly spelled by someone on the East Coast. Experts at AT&T used Google Trends to find the most searched “how to spell” words from March 2020 to March 2021 in an attempt to understand the demographics of misspelled words in the United States .

Quarantine
The most searched term in 12 states wordpress web design agency was “How to spell quarantine” — which is not surprising given the global context we’ve faced over the past two years. Indiana, Massachusetts, Colorado, Connecticut, Missouri, Minnesota, Nevada, Tennessee, Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin and Wyoming were the states that Googled the term. “Corn teen” was the most common misspelling of the word “quarantine.”
Favorite
The second most common word people searched for on the internet was "Favorite." It was the most searched for "how to spell" word in the states of Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, New Mexico, Ohio, and Virginia. The most commonly misspelled word was "Favourite." In this regard, it is interesting to note that "favourite" with a "u" is used in the British form of English.
Coronavirus
Again, it’s no surprise that pandemic-related terms were searched for given the challenges we’re all facing during this time. The most commonly misspelled word in a whopping 6 states — Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Vermont — was “coronavirus.” The most commonly misspelled word people used was “Caronavirus.”
Which
Five states, including Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Oklahoma, searched for the term "How to spell Which." The most common misspellings of the word were "wich" and "witch."
All, believe and definitely
The most searched terms in 3 states were "All", "believe" and "definitively". "evary"; "beleive"; "definitly", "definately" and "defiantly" were the most commonly misspelled words for each of these.
Another misspelled word
The US searched for eighteen different words to learn their correct spelling. “Separate” was the most searched spelling term in 2 states and also made the list. Alaska’s biggest grammar question was about “eighty.” “Receive” was the most misspelled word in Arkansas; “government” was the most searched word in Delaware; and “succeed” was the most misspelled word in Washington DC. Florida searched for the spelling of the word “pharaoh,” while Idaho wanted to know how to spell “piece” and Kansas wanted to learn how to spell “multiplication.” “Watch” was the most requested word in Maine, while “exercise” was the most requested word in North America and “confident” in Texas. Luckily for us, the internet is here and can be one of our best allies when it comes to writing a document in English.
